Bald Eagle Update Sept. 22, 2012

While you were away...

Summer is a busy time but in between summer travels, the bald eagle is beginning to take shape.

I finally had an opportunity to ask Bart about the dimensions of the piece -- so here's the story:

A bald eagle is typically between 32" and 40" in length. 

This half-scale carving will be about 18" long and will take six-months to complete.

The dimensions of the initial block of wood were 8"x8"x19".

Bart is away until early September but stay tuned in mid-September for a photo update. 

I will be in the area then and see the piece in person for the first time. 

New undertaking: An American Bald Eagle

This commission represents a bold new undertaking for our carver as he takes on the American Bald Eagle, one of this country's most majestic and emblematic birds.

It is hard to imagine how this solid block of wood will become a half-scale Bald Eagle.
But here goes...

How to know when a project is finished?
During an interview, Bart told Jordan: "I know it's finished when I get to the end and I like it!"
And, he added, "Every time I finish one, I have another piece of wood, I start something."

The second carving waiting in the wings was selected by Bart. Caleb's request was simply: "surprise me." It is just as well that his is the second project since Caleb will be performing with the International Tour of West Side Story for the next 18-months. I know numerous people who will be willing to "keep" the duck for him should it be finished before his return!
